This vintage male nude beefcake photograph by photographer BOB MIZER of the Athletic Model Guild, dates from the late 1940s or early 1950s, and features handsome, hunky, tattooed, hairy-chested, popular model DALE CURRY in a classic studio pose.
The AMG early set number ZG-1 is handwritten on the reverse.
Dale Curry
Curry posed for some of the best photographers of the era, including Kovert of LA, Philmar Studios, and Lyle Frisbee. Mizer featured Curry on the cover of the MARCH 1954 edition of
Physique Pictorial
and described him as follows:
DALE CURRY, age 21, ht 5.9, wt about 160. Chest relaxed 40. Chest expanded 43. Neck 16. Biceps 14¾, Calf 15, Thigh 22, Waist 29, Hips 33, Forearm 11.
At the time Dale Curry first came to AMG he was driving a truck for a beer company. Offered several opportunities for movie work, he has turned them all down, not caring for the "Hollywood" type of life. He is the father of two beautiful children.... Dale is much tougher than his handsome features would indicate, and can hold his own in any man's fight, which has occasionally been necessary when some "punk" resented his good looking features.
Bob Mizer's Athletic Model Guild
Bob Mizer got his start photographing Hollywood's less-hopefuls in his garage as early as the mid-1940s. For a few bucks their photos were listed in the catalog of the Athletic Model Guild, the purpose of which was to furnish models for artists and photographers. However, as Mizer's photographs became as popular as the models, he developed a trademark style that included projected backgrounds and lavish props.
Condition
The approximately 4-by-5-inch vintage photograph is beautifully printed in warm tones on heavy stock and is in very good condition. Quality and clarity are very good.
The "BigKugels" watermark in the scan displayed here does not appear on the actual auction item.
