    In Japan, Ksitigarbha, known as
    Jizō
    , or
    Ojizō-sama
as he is respectfully known, is one of the most loved of all Japanese divinities
His statues are a common sight, especially by roadsides and in graveyards
In modern Japan, Jizō is popularly venerated as the guardian of unborn, aborted, miscarried, and stillborn babies and
there is a tradition in Zen monasteries in Japan of offering Jizo ceremonies to help ease the grief of women who have lost children
especially beloved in Zen (Japanese) and Chinese Buddhism
Traditionally, he is seen as the guardian of children, including dead children, women, especially pregnant women, firemen, pilgrims and travelers
His familiar staff in seen behind his right shoulder.  Called a shakujo in Japanese, it is a monks staff hung with metal rings, used to alert insects and small animals of his approach, so that he will not accidentally harm them
designed and created in a small studio in Oregon, USA
made from an "ivory look" resin
3" tall, 1" at the widest point
    contemporary and brand new
One of my buyers recently deciphered the very fine writing on the sides of Jizo's robe:
When I see the misery of those in this world their sadness becomes mine.
Oh that my monks robes were wide enough to gather up all the suffering people in this floating world.
Nothing makes me more happy than the vow to save everyone.
